Palma de Mallorca - La Isla del encanto

So I went to Mallorca with two other Loras students and we decided that we weren’t going to plan anything because that way nothing could go wrong. Academically intelligent people right?
Arrival onto the island.

Friday
Friday was a normal day for me I went to my internship, came home had lunch, and left for Meghan's flat (her host mother was driving us to the airport). Sadly, though her car antenna got stuck on the garage door and it broke off.

Check-in was a breeze, I got a total of 156 miles for flying with Air Berlin to Palma de Mallorca (which officially became member of the Oneworld Alliance on the 20/March/2012! )

During the flight though the right wing flew through a turblence patch that made the plane make a sudden shift to the left. In all my travels, this was the first time I ever experience such a thing. Some girls started to scream and actually made Meghan jump and grab my arm. It felt pretty neat, of course I am just an airplane junkie.

Friday evening we landed into Palma and went to the hotel (yes, hotel.  We found a hotel that was basically the same price as the hostels, so naturally we went for the hotel) rested for a bit and then went out to find food.  We asked the guy at the front desk for recommendations for restaurants and he gave us the name of and directions to one where we could try Mallorcan food. Now mind you that I am always multitasking in my head, so I wasn't really listening to what he was saying because I secretly hoped that Meghan and Joshua would be being attention, three smart young adults, how hard is it to find a restaurant.  But after we got to the Burger King, none of us could remember what he said after that.  So basically we just wandered around the area looking for other places to eat.  We eventually settled on a place that had pizza, and I made Josh and Meghan jealous because mine had meat and there’s didn't. I don’t recall what Josh got, but Meghan got one that had more onion than anything else. The same man was at the reception had seen us pass in front of the hotel (in the opposite direction of the restaurant) so he knew that we didn't go to his recommended location.  We had a good laugh and then he drew us a map and we all made sure to pay attention so we could find it next time.

Saturday
Breakfast was Josh approved, which is highly important on any trip, having josh’s approval is a major plus, and then we took the bus into downtown Palma.  Our hotel was about a half hour  ride into the city center and I swear that all of the people on that bus were Germans.  And that about all of the Germans were retirees on holiday.  We basically just walked around Palma and went into the Cathedral, and other key locations throughout the city. Then we sat in the park and just watched people, I love seeing people in their natural habitat, so it was interesting to be in a park where there was not so many Germans! Apparently we were in the "ghetto" area, but I am not sure about that.

Sunday
I went to a location where I haven’t been in years the BEACH!  It was gorgeous weather on Sunday and we went and laid out on the beach, I went and decided to do something crazy and stick my feat in the water, stupidest thing ever, because now I am sick.  But there were a good number of people out there on the beach German of course, doing normal beach stuff.  It was cool to see people that were kite surfing; while others were wind surfing and in the distance there were sailboats.  We went back to the hotel to eat more bread, cheese and chorizo and then we rented bikes!  The island was infested with bicyclists, and they were all in groups with matching outfits, and you can guess from where……………………….Germany!  Finally made it to the restaurant we were so to go to on Friday night. It was very good but a bit out of the budget.

Monday

Took a touristic/scenic train from Palma to Soller (see the map below), which is on the northern side of the island.  It was an old fashioned train and it took us little over an hour to get there.  Oh, and did I mention that pretty much everyone else on the train was German?  We got to Soller, which is a pretty small town that I’m pretty sure highly depends on the tourism brought by the train. We just wandered around the city and then went back to Palma.  We hung out in Palma a bit longer, had lunch, poked around a few stores and then went back to the hotel to work on our presentation for our final project proposal.

Tuesday
We basically bummed around the hotel until we had to check out and go to the airport.  There’s really nothing too special after that. I was a bit depressed to return back to Galicia. I really enjoyed my time in Mallorca and hope that I can return one day.
